Steve Sands, Co-founder, South Simcoe Hockey School
Steve’s passion for hockey started early in his youth playing for the Chinguacousy (Bramalea) AAA team, winning an OMHA title in 1981. Although he spent the majority of his minor hockey with the Chinguacousy AAA team he also played with the Toronto Young Nationals, winning a Carnation Cup in 1983, the Toronto Red Wings and finally finishing off his minor hockey career in Newmarket playing for the Major Peewee and Minor Bantam AA teams prior to York Simcoe Express coming into the picture years later. One of his highlights in Newmarket was playing for the age group above of his own in the ’87 OMHA Finals vs Chatham, although they lost it stands out as a highlight for him when looking back at his days in minor hockey. The notable highlights of his hockey career included being selected to the “Alternate Team” for the Ontario under 17 team in 1988, being signed to the London Knights in 1989 which enabled him to play for the London Knights on occasion while playing for his full time team, the Tillsonburg Titans, the London Knights affiliate at that time. Soon after he went on to play with the St. Mikes Buzzers, Aurora Eagles, Bramalea Blues and finally finishing his playing career during the preseason of ’96 with the Amarillo Rattlers of the Western Professional Hockey League.
By far, his most rewarding hockey role was in coaching, working at a hockey school in Brampton for over ten years before opening up South Simcoe Hockey School in 2005 where he was able to apply the knowledge he picked up along the way as both player and coach to a school of his own. Since 2006, Steve has been a Head Coach and Asst Coach at various levels within the Barrie Minor Hockey Association as well as coaching the St. John Paul II Catholic School as head coach from 2012 – 2018. Currently Steve is the Head Coach of the Barrie Colts Minor Midget AA team and is looking forward to the upcoming 2019-2020 season.
Alex Caruso, Co-founder, South Simcoe Hockey School
Alex’s hockey career began at an early age, playing for many years at the AAA level with the Toronto Marlies and the Chinguacousy (Bramalea) AAA throughout the 1980’s. Alex moved on to play for the Vaughan Raiders at the Provincial Junior A division and finished his hockey career with the Bramalea Blues Metro Junior A division in 1990.
Alex’s most rewarding hockey position was coaching, where he also was a lead instructor at a hockey school in Brampton in 1994 until launching South Simcoe Hockey School in 2005 with longtime hockey friend, Steve Sands. In addition to his instructing at South Simcoe Hockey, Alex has been a volunteer coaching his 3 kids teams throughout the years with the Barrie Minor Hockey Assocation and Barrie Sharks Women’s Hockey Association as well as instructed the St. John Paul II Catholic School as head coach in 2019.

Since its inception in 2008, Xcelerate Hockey has been providing opportunities for hockey players to develop a deeper understanding of the sport through the development of the fundamental skills of the game.
After traveling the world playing professional hockey, and coaching minor hockey at the AAA level, we have seen the impact that a solid foundation in hockey skills can have on a young player.
In today’s game, there is added emphasis on player speed, however great players require the ability to maintain puck control and on-ice awareness when playing a faster game.”
The goal of Xcelerate Hockey is to:
1. Isolate fundamental hockey skills, and then improve them through a series of focused drills.
2. Produce players who are more confident in their abilities, make better hockey decisions and ultimately enjoy the game.
Our highly experienced coaching staff is ready to work with players of any skill level to ensure that their development is paramount. Xcelerate Hockey believes that fundamental skills are the foundation of each player’s success.

We at Defence First are excited to introduce the only defensive school of its kind. Defence First will sharpen fundamental skills such as skating, passing, shooting, checking, and puckhandling. But what makes our school uniquely effective, is the time we spend devoted to the mental skills and specialty skills we, as defensive players, have acquired throughout our careers.
It is well known throughout the sports world, especially hockey, that “Defence Wins Championships.” Defence First will give defensive players an opportunity to reach their maximum potential and achieve individual success. This, in turn, will lead to greater contributions toward team success.
“We were looking for a defensive camp and we found The Defence Camp”
Whether your goal is to be the best on your team this upcoming season, to play in the NHL, or to simply play the game of hockey with greater knowledge, “Defence First” will help you reach your goals.
For nearly a decade I have been teaching goalies of all ages, and skill levels. From house league to the NHL, it’s been a privilege to be on the ice with my students and share my knowledge and passion about goaltending.
When it comes to goalie coaching in the Greater Toronto Area and creases everywhere, I’m here to help you do what our name is all about – Stop The Puck.
We aren’t the first to say this, but it’s true – a goalie is like a giant ever-changing puzzle. To help put those pieces together, we will take the time to address each skill that you want to learn and improve upon.
At Stop The Puck Goaltending, we stay on top of the latest techniques, including the modern butterfly. Puck tracking skills are also an essential element to the position, which has also helped resurrect certain stand-up aspects to the game. Goalies don’t need to go down for every shot, especially at an early age, which is why we place such a strong emphasis on focusing on the puck and making the proper save selection. It’s one thing to know technique, it’s another thing to know when to use it.
Skating is the fundamental skill that all other skills in hockey are based on. Stride Hockey was created by head instructor Lino Di Lella to help players develop proper stride mechanics and develop them into more efficient and powerful skaters.
The importance of learning proper technique is vital in skill development, and muscle memory. This is the reason why Stride Hockey breaks down skills and teaches in progression to maximize a player’s potential.
As players progress so does the level of intensity and training. Our program is designed to push players regardless of age and skill level to work outside their comfort zone to develop more refined skills, confidence in their abilities and to continue to grow as a player.
Through personalized, positive and motivating teaching techniques Stride Hockey is able to get the best out of their athletes.
See for yourself the difference Stride Hockey can make!

Mike Ellis Bio
The owner, Founder and Head Instructor Progressive Hockey Development Mike is an experienced and focused individual with a real passion for skating and skill development in today’s fast-paced game.
Mike has played and coached against top hockey nations throughout Europe and has absorbed and developed many teaching techniques that he shares with all athletes he works with. As a coach an instructor Mike believes in detail and technique. He believes the old theory of 10,000 repetitions to master a skill can be drastically reduced through delivering a detailed progression based plan and providing the right information to the athlete. This higher level of detail helps the athlete to absorb the information with more focus.
