SOUTH COAST GENERALS

Spring hockey tournament team program to help further develop players once their winter team season is complete. South Coast Generals is a spring hockey program which allows players the opportunity to develop their hockey skills, game strategies, and athletic training beyond the regular season. The program focuses on aspects of the game that are not always achievable in the regular season. We provide both on and off ice training for our players. We also focus on each player individually to make sure that by the end of the program they have advanced in their overall game.

Our team plays in multiple spring tournaments which are not used to measure the team’s success but rather as a building tool to develop the team and individual player’s hockey skills. We also focus on the aspect of keeping the game of hockey fun, challenging, and rewarding for our athlete. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing a smile on a young athlete’s face because of the satisfaction they have of knowing that they have become a better player and have had fun doing it!!

I know it seems crazy to be thinking about Spring hockey already but just a heads up to mark these dates down on your calendar if your interested in trying out for our South Coast Generals teams this year (tryouts start in less than 3 months). Also note we will be building girls teams this year to add to our lineup, feel free to spread the word.

JUNIOR EAGLES 2011

For more information please contact Bryce at bryce.strilchuk@avisonyoung.com or 780-999-3253.

The 2011 Junior Eagles organization is committed to bringing together a select group of 2011 born hockey players to compete at the highest level for their age group. The Junior Eagles organization has a track record of developing their young players both on and off the ice with strong core values that help these young athletes develop personally and athletically.

The coaches are focused on personal skill development to the best of each player’s ability while starting to implement and teach the team game. The team takes a multi-year approach with an emphasis on long term development rather than short term success.  If you are looking for an opportunity to play spring hockey please get in touch with us, we would love to hear from you.

The program will evolve as the players grow and develop. This includes increasing the number of practices, modifications to dryland, adding length to the spring season and attending additional tournaments.

MAITLAND ICE SHARKS

Ice Sharks Gearing Up for 2018 Spring Season
Submitted By Greg McNevan on Saturday, January 13, 2018

After a very successful 2017 spring season we are hoping to continue to build the Maitland Ice Sharks to be able to provide spring hockey at all levels in both boys and girls.

Many coaches and their staff are returning from last season, and at some levels we have added teams.  We are very appreciative of the non-parent coaches that came forward to lead our young athletes. These kids really love being around these young guys.  Primarily this is a group of individuals that have grown up or played hockey in Listowel, most of them for our Jr. B Cyclones.  They have all played the game at a high level and been coached by Jason Brooks, who continues to support all of the coaching staff within the Ice Shark organization.
We are still looking to put together a 2006 boys team, and a 2006/07 girls team.  If you have any interest in taking the lead in putting a group of players together please contact Greg McNevan (226)622-9105 or Warren Beisel (519) 386-9939 for details.
Our 2004 Minor Bantams will be going to Boston the first weekend in May.  They will play in a tournament and visit a couple post secondary schools in the area, where they will tour the facilities and meet with some of the hockey staff.  This a hockey experience that we would like to set up every year for our Minor Bantam age Ice Sharks. Minor Bantam will be the last year of spring hockey, and we feel this leaves them with a hockey experience that they will enjoy and remember.

Looking forward to the 2018 Spring Season!

THE GRANDVIEW JUNIOR HOCKEY

The Grandview Junior Hockey Association was formed August 17, 1967 after acceptance into the West Coast Junior Hockey League.  The Association was formed “to foster, improve and perpetuate a Junior Hockey Team in east Vancouver for players in that area”.

The original name of the team was Rowan’s Grandview Steelers, named after Ed Rowan, owner of Rowan Steel Ltd., who provided financial assistance to the community sponsored team.  From day one, until the 2003-2004 season, the Steelers’ home games were played on the small ice at “Trout Lake Arena” attached to the Grandview Community Centre.  The original colours adopted were black and orange.  The current colours black and gold were adopted in the 1980-1981 season.  They were the colours of that era’s Grandview Minor Hockey Association.  Over many years, the largest percentage of Steelers players came from the Grandview Minor Hockey Association.

Over time, the club found if difficult to remain a contender due to its mandate which was to take players primarily from Grandview while other clubs searched far and wide even to the extent of reaching out of province.  There was also the difficulty of increasing operational costs within an era of Jr. B clubs trying to operate more on a Jr. A level while the rink the Steelers were mandated to play in did not accommodate enough fans to help pay the bills.

Louis and Yvonne Szendrei took over the running of the club when in 1980-1981; Louis became President/Governor of the Grandview Steelers.  Prior to that, Louis was President of the Grandview Minor Hockey Association.  Since that time, Louis has noted the foregoing difficulties but despite them, has enjoyed numerous successes that include going all the way.  The Steelers were the 1993-1994 Provincial Champions.  The Steelers, under the current coach, Aldo Bruno were the 1999-2000 Provincial Finalists having achieved 2nd place and Aldo was name Coach of the Year that season.

Recognizing that within current times, the Steelers had outgrown Trout Lake, Louis Szendrei moved the team to Britannia Community Centre.  The larger ice and much improved fan accommodation improved the spirits of the fans and players.  Over time, players would be more eager to come and try out for the Steelers, who it is understood have always had management with a player concern attitude and the best of coaching.

Starting the 2007-2008 season the Steelers changed hands from Louis and Yvonne Szendrei to Mike and Sandy Moscone and Aldo Bruno.  Louis and Yvonne have stayed on as Governor and Alternating Governor, respectively.  After many glorious years of exciting hockey in Vancouver East at the Trout Lake and Britannia Arenas, not only did the 2007-2008 season bring new owners but it also brought a permanent change of venue to the Burnaby Winter Club.

The 2007-2008 season would see the Steelers struggle at the beginning but become victorious at the end with the winning of the League Championship (PIJHL) over the ever persistent Abbotsford Pilots.  The Steelers arrived in Kimberley and walked away with the Provincial Championship (Cyclone Taylor Cup).  The next stop in an already incredible year would be Selkirk, Manitoba for the Western Canadian Finals or Keystone Cup.  The Steelers came home with the Bronze.

Now the start of the 2008-2009 Season is upon us, new season, new team members, but as always
